Clogs, 12" x 16", acrylics on canvas
Clogs, 12″ x 16″, acrylics on canvas

This is the first of a series of acrylic works I’m painting to be exhibited later this summer at a gallery or a First Friday event. The series will be themed after my native country, The Netherlands.

What better way to kick it off than with a pair of Dutch wooden clogs?!  This pair is actually my own pair that I use for doing yard work or to go into our chicken coop.

Contrary to what tourists are often told in big Dutch cities, many Dutch farmers still wear these wooden shoes and they are readily available at farm stores. They are sturdy, protect your feet, waterproof and they actually keep your feet also warm (wood retains heat well).

For this painting I started with an underpainting that I airbrushed to get the shapes and values in. Once set up the rest is all traditional brush work.

Now that the weather in Denver finally got nicer I did most of the painting outside on my patio.

I already started the next painting in this series, featuring a typical Dutch bicycle….
